Electricity generation co-operation
I think all of those who attended IPL night matches during the early stages of winter in South Africa had a nagging suspicion in the back of their minds that there may be power outages or electricity interruption during the matches.
Well, we were pleased to learn how seriously the Southern African region is taking the power supply issue and of course bearing in mind the massive spinoff for the whole region should South Africa successfully hold the World cup soccer in 2010. The SAPP or Southern African Power Pool has pledged support to South Africa and our power needs by promising to supply extra electricity to South Africa.
The Objectives of the SAPP are
Provide a forum for the development of a world class, robust, safe, efficient, reliable and stable interconnected electrical system in the southern African region.
Co-ordinate and enforce common regional standards of Quality of Supply; measurement and monitoring of systems performance.
Harmonise relationships between member utilities.
Facilitate the development of regional expertise through training programmes and research.
Increase power accessibility in rural communities.
Implement strategies in support of sustainable development priorities.
Perhaps the region will recognise the positive spinoff of working together instead of being at each others throats and make Africa the powerhouse that it deserves to be.
